Jehoiakim (Eliakim; Joiakim)
(fl. 7th-6th cent BCE)
   King of Judah (608-598 BCE), son of Josiah. He was made king by Pharaoh Necho II in succession to his brother Jehoahaz (2). During the first three years of his reign Judah was subject to Egypt. After Necho II was defeated in the battle of Carchemish in 605 BCE, Judah came under the Babylonian yoke; according to II Chronicles, Nebuchadnezzar bound him in fetters to take him to Babylon (II Chronicles 36:6ff). Jehoiakim was a vassal of Babylon for three years before he rebelled (II Kings 24:1), which brought about his downfall and death.
